BioShock ist eine Mischung aus Ego-Shooter, Action Adventure und Rollenspiel (ähnlich wie Deus Ex, System Shock etc.). Vom Setting her ist das Spiel recht düster und Sci-Fi-lastig gehalten, was auch logisch ist, denn BioShock ist der indirekte Nachfolger zu System Shock 2. Es geht allerdings dieses Mal tief hinab. In der Unterwasserstadt Rapture warten zahlreiche Mutanten darauf, dem Spieler das virtuelle Leben zur Hölle zu machen.
